Intel Core i7-8650U vs Core i7-8550U benchmark: which processor is best for your laptop

Intel Core i7-8650U vs Core i7-8550U benchmark

Today we benchmark the Intel Core i7-8650U and the Intel Core i7-8550U, what should be in our future laptop? If we look at the specifications of these processors we find very similar data. Both processors are part of the eighth generation Kaby Lake R and are manufactured using the 14 nm process. Both have a maximum of four cores and eight threads, with a TDP of 15 W and integrated graphics Intel UHD Graphics 620. If we continue reading your file, we find that they support dual-channel DDR4 RAM up to 2400 MHz and the sets Manual, AVX2, Quick Sync, Virtualization and AES-NI.

The main difference of these processors is the speed, the Intel Core i7-8650U operates at a speed of 1.9 GHz while the Intel Core i7-8550U does it at 1.8; a very small difference that looks power when we look at its speeds of Turbo Boost 4.20 GHz for the 8650U and 4 GHz for the 8550U.

Three benchmarks were done: Cinebench, Photoshop and Fritz, giving very similar results. The benchmarks that have been made to these processors is about 3D rendering, Adobe Photoshop editing and raw performance. If we look at the 3D rendering, test performed through Cinebench 15, the winning processor is the Intel Core i7-8650U with a score of 657. While the i7-8550U is approaching it with 637 having a 1.4% less power in this test. As for the Adobe Photoshop test we find that the i7-8550U processor gets 10.01 points, while the i7-8650U gets a score, 0.8% better, of 8.74.

In gross performance, the results are quite striking, since the difference between one and the other is much greater. Returns to beat the i7-8650U with 13897 points in the Fritz test, exceeding by 3.1% the i7-8550U. We should not look only at the processor when buying a new laptop, both processors have a very similar performance; when choosing which laptop to buy with these CPUs, it is best to look at other specifications: battery, price, GPU performance, keyboard, screen, etc.
