Asus A555L Review: An excellent cheap gaming laptop

Asus A555L is a gaming laptop that does not cost a lot. Right now, it is being sold for under 50000 rupees in the Indian market which is less than 1000 dollars. For this, the buyer gets a 15.6 inch laptop with Intel Core i5 processor and powerful Nvidia GeForce 930M graphics core. Read the full Asus A555L review below.

Asus A555L review

Design – The casing of the Asus A555L is similar to the F550 and X550 line and that is not a bad thing at all. We love how slim and nice it looks. We adore its tapered sides that gives it a ultrabook like appearance. The lid has nice textured to it.

Recovery – There is no recovery DVD inside the box but you do have a 500MB recovery partition that will easily help you get to the factory state. On the left we have power socket, Gigabit-Ethernet, VGA, HDMI, 2x USB 3.0, Kensington lock slot and right side features memory-card reader, combo audio jack, USB 2.0 and DVD writer.

Keyboard + Touchpad – Asus A555L dons a nice full size laptop keyboard with dedicated number pad. The keys are chiclet type and have subtly roughened surface, medium drop and clear pressure point. If you love typing, you will have no problem in typing novels on it. That said, I do yearn for a full size right shift key. The multi touch trackpad has surface area of 10.5×7.3 centimeters and supports all windows 10 gestures. Left and right click keys are built into the touchpad.

Display – The display is not the brightest we have seen from Asus but is just ok for gaming and general use. It does have slight yellowish cast to it so white colors appear a bit yellowish. You will only notice this when doing some photo editing or when comparing to something that has higher quality IPS display.

GPU – Asus A555L is a well all-around laptop with decent gaming capable GPU. Performance in gaming is excellent. We had no troubles playing Street Fighter IV on it. There were no drop in frames or performance. Same can be said about other games we played on it which include Tomb Raider, Age of Racing, Asphalt 8 Airborne and so on.

Processor – Asus A555L comes with Intel Core i5 5200U processor that is used in a lot of mid range laptops and ultrabooks. It does an excellent job in loading applications and games quickly. All this when coupled with 8GB RAM ensures uncompromised speed with very little chance of paging. It scored 3688 in the cpu passmark benchmark test which is an excellent figure. In comparison, the i7 5500U scored 4039 so there is no need to get the i7 version over this i5 variant.

Temperature – Asus must be praised for keeping the overall temperature of the laptop low at all times. Its Ice Cool tech really seemed to be working and the temperature never came close to 40 degrees anytime during the stress test.

Battery life – If all you do is web surfing and do usual work over Wi-Fi, you will be getting just over 4 hours of battery life runtime with it. If you do gaming, do not expect it to give you 1-1.5 hour of runtime.

Verdict – Asus A555L is an excellent cheap gaming laptop under 50000. There is no need to spend 80000-100000 on a laptop just to play games. Asus A555L impressed us while running the most CPU-intensive apps and of course, high end games. Yes the display is not the most accurate screen we have used and nor does it pack full HD resolution but at 50000, we just cannot complain much.
